In Engines of Growth, a report released this week by Amazon Web Services based on a survey of 3,413 startup founders and executives across 20 countries, one figure stood out: Saudi AI-native companies businesses less than five years old and built around artificial intelligence from day one are achieving annual revenue growth of 150%, compared with just 62% among traditional Saudi startups.

Of these companies, 63% have developed proprietary AI capabilities, including custom models, compared with only 35% of traditional companies. This is the real distinction between “consuming” artificial intelligence and “owning” it.

A total of 72% have a formal AI strategy, exceeding the global average of 68%.

Cloud adoption is nearly universal at 98%, partly explaining how quickly these companies can scale regionally and globally without the burden of traditional infrastructure.

The distinction identified in the report between a company that merely “uses” artificial intelligence and one that is truly AI-native is not simply a matter of terminology. According to Amr Elmasry, General Manager of AWS Saudi Arabia, in comments to Arab News, most companies add artificial intelligence to processes that already exist. AI-native companies, by contrast, begin with an entirely different question: What can artificial intelligence make possible? The company is then built entirely around that capability.

This structural difference is directly reflected in the numbers: 48% of AI-native companies generate more than $400,000 in revenue per employee, compared with only 28% of traditional companies. A business built around artificial intelligence from the outset does not need to restructure entire teams later to accommodate it. Operational efficiency is embedded in the company’s foundational design, rather than added as a patch after years of manual processes.

From Conferences to Budgets: Where Does Arabic AI Stand in This Landscape?

The real question in this transformation is not only how quickly a company grows, but who owns the model driving that growth. According to the report, 63% of Saudi AI-native companies have developed proprietary AI capabilities. This raises a deeper question that extends beyond headline growth figures: Were these proprietary models originally built to understand the morphological complexity and dialectal diversity of Arabic, or are they extensions of models primarily trained on English-language data and later “Arabized”?
